New to hunting - Wanna catch a deer a year in Quebec. Gun or crossbow?

Edit - thanks y'all, I got a bunch of great answers. I think I got what I need for the general question and need to find who to talk to here in Quebec to get the local details for teh rest.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm in Quebec, want to get into hunting with the goal of providing meat for my family. My goal is to hunt one deer a year; I don't care much about the sport of it, it's really just a utilitarian thing. Also - I'm not super cheap but don't want to spend more than what is actually necessary on my weapon.

I looked into the legalities here, and it sounds like getting the license and hunting with a crossbow is simpler and cheaper, and gives me a longer season.
From what I understand, the tradeoff is range - but I have a hard time understanding how that actually impacts my chances of catching a deer in an outing.

If I translate it to how many days should I expect to be out to catch a deer - what does it actually mean? Are my chances much higher one way or another?

And a second question - Is a partner necessary? I enjoy being by myself, but do have people to potentially hunt with.

(I don't have any hunting experience with any weapon, but have plenty of outdoor experience and spent some years in the army. I was an ok shot back in the day, so there's no huge barrier for using a rifle).

Got my well water tested, and the results show 2ppm iron (with organic iron - something that I already guessed based on the orange slime everywhere) and 0.3ppm manganese.

I'm trying to wrap my head around a decent whole-house solution for the iron, but it seems like there are a million options.

  1. Is there any point in shocking the well and seeing if that helps before buying a system?
  2. I'm looking for a budget-friendly, easy to maintain solution. I'm seeing chlorine injection + a mixing tank + a backwashing filter as an option. Should that be my go-to?
