We are in Dumfries. It is me and my wife and our now 3 year old.

We went on UC last June, our council tax direct debit went from £220 pm to approx £22 pm after we received our first payment in July 2025, we then had 4 further payments of £22 that automatically came out via DD before they stopped taking anything.

I got a new job in August 2025 which has reduced how much UC we receive (from £901 pm to around £300-£500 depending on how many hours I can get at work). In November 2025 we received a council tax statement with a recalculated amount owed of around £1000 for the year which they are asking us to pay.

Does this sound right? Trying to talk to anyone at the council about this feels impossible and they don'treally seem to know what's what!
