Corsair - I know that over the years since it’s release CIG haven’t been kind to it but I still love this ship and nothing gives me the same feeling in verse

It’s just the perfect ship for me as a solo player that combines actual usability with franchise main character vibes. I don’t know what other word to use than that this ship feels “plausible”.

Big dakka, cool animations, great interior, awesome QF capacity and a nice big shield. It feels safe.

My biggest gripe and the only thing that CIG really did to it that bothers me is the nerfed flight profile. It flies like a bar of soap. There’s plenty of wiggle room between flies like a brick and overturned. Even the axis rotation of the much larger, heavier TAC would feel great on the Corsair whilst still not really giving it an advantage over anything.

Anyway, just sharing my love for the old space tub.

Someone destroyed my ship at Pyro, I got out when it crashed, waited, they landed to take my cargo thinking I was dead, I killed them, took their ship and my cargo and flew home. Then I realised that we won't be able to do that anymore.

If someone destroys your ship when you're out on foot when 4.8 hits there's no way of getting home. You can't commandeer abandoned ships anymore and make a getaway.

It would have been a solid move to make ships flyable but having the components bricked upon removal

I used to hate this thing. But now, we are buddies

My dislike for the Asgard was pretty irrational. I think I just loved the Valk so much that the incredibly similar upgrade bothered me some. That and I preferred the Valks silhouette with the neatly packed engines. I also may have been a big hipster and rebelled against it due to its popularity.

But, I have some spare upgrade credits and I thought I’d give this guy another chance before ILW and I have to say, it’s grown on me.

It’s just a very easy ship to use, It covers all basis and whilst I do still prefer the Valk visually I can’t deny the efficacy of the Asgard.

It’s too good of a ship to just ignore.

The armour changes have done less to effect the LF meta than you'd assume, LF's were just equipping NDB's anyway and even then a good LF pilot can equip pretty much anything with enough alpha and dominate most solo ships with relative ease.

The issue is that it's now a lot harder to apply damage to LF's. Previously the most effective anti LF weapons were the CF laser repeaters, they had an 1800 m/s projectile speed meaning that when LF's were approaching you could apply damage whilst strafing to better avoid them closing distance until you were trapped by your own turn rates. The MX's ability to strafe coupled with it's impressive gimbal range and stock rhinos made it a more competitive option than something like a vanguard for PvP. Even if the LF could still dust you with NDB's.

However not only are you now more susceptible to damage but you can't reliably apply your own because the CF's have had their weapon speed reduced by nearly 400 m/s. They have a slower projectile speed in the PTU than the S4 breakneck gatlings do in the PU.

What's more is that it's still the fastest velocity size 4 weapon, tied now with the attrition. The problem with the attrition against LF's is the slow rate of fire. And for clarity this effects CF's across the board, not just the size 4's.

We have a couple of excellent HF pilots but it was an absolute massacre throughout the testing period.

TLDR; It's easier to apply damage to HF's and it's harder to apply damage to LF's due to armour and weapon velocity changes

I really like MK2 but I’m genuinely flying this a lot more, it flies like a dream. I was absolutely intending to upgrade from this when I bought it but honestly don’t think I will. It’s earned its keep purely by being fun.

It’s surprisingly effective in combat too. Nice and nimble, great turn rates and a good deal smaller than a Gladius. You can upgrade two of the weapons by one size as well.

It’s just seems like they left a lot on the table with this, especially considering how much they neglected the ship as far as defence and mobility goes.

There’s a ton of room in this thing to play with for modularity/ variants.

It’s also been out since November and it’s still not available in the PTU build which might mean they want to keep it in the store along with a new variant to get the most out of people before it his a buyable in game state.

You can pretty much just chop the lower compartment off with the cargo area, med bed and crafting table and have a very functional ship that you could comfortably convince people was faster and more manoeuvrable. Just slap two more size 3’s on the front.

I’m not saying I necessarily think it’s the pitbull, but, if you chop the bottom off the clipper and slap an armoured plate on top of the canopy you’ve got something that looks fairly clipperesque.

Pitbull speculation aside, I think we have a mini corsair/ combat variant of this ship on the horizon

Currently its just idle/ non interactive gameplay whilst you travel. It would be nice to have an in game news feed from different planets/ systems/ manufactures that provides information in game and gives players something to look at during long idle periods.

Of course subject to change as always but as it stands I'm not sure how I feel about this, I was starting to enjoy the newest armor changes, the made sense to some degree.

The Asgard has been hit hard. Only mentioning that ship specifically as I know its a crowd favourite but really everything has. It's deflection rates are 59/32. The heavy fighters got nerfed heavily alongside the Connies and Corsair and the Shiv has been weakened even further defensively

As a comparison the Corsair is now less armored in the PTU than the shiv currently is in the PU.

But really it's everything that's taken a big hit, all values are down across the board.

Edit: I've added a link for the new values below

Is this me missing something? It's brutal the way I've been doing it. It makes only a few combat ships viable due to the QF requirements and half of my play session I'm just sitting ideal in QT

Slower than an SRV.

less armor totals, armor deflection, stock shielding and over twice the size of an Aurora MKII.

A third of the cargo grid of a shiv and half of a nomad.

Less QF than a heavy fighter

The largest front cross section in the entire game, including the Idris…

Too slow to run from a fight, too weak to survive one and with emissions too large to hide.

An absolute POS by every performance metric including a price tag that exceeds the cutty black by $40 whilst having half of its performance.

And yet, I love it. It’s one of the only ships that has the vibe of a main characters ship from a sci-fi franchise in its size category.

Edit two for visibility: You can still dupe.

But, you can only dupe stock components. You can currently remove the stock components from a ship via ship manager, reclaim it as stock and have the components come back whilst keeping the others and have them not be bricked. This seemed to be the case for me anyway.

Firstly if your ship is destroyed you lose all the missiles that you originally had on the ship, even if they were fully stocked and you'll have to buy them back with every claim. So every time you claim a firebird you'll need to spend another 180,000 whether you used your missiles or not.

You do get your ballistic ammo back meaning you don't have to pay for that when claiming. But, if you want to get your ballistics back without destroying your ship, so a landing pad for example, you'll need to pay for your missiles as well. And, of course, if i hangar eats your ship or you bug out and blow up leaving the hangar you're paying for the insurance and the rearming even if you just rearmed seconds before.

Insurance really isn't that much for smaller ships and isn't all that much more than the expediated fee, it's also instant.

You will lose your pledged paints if not insured. I really don't like this personally and think it needs to be addressed before going to live. I didn't even realise until I tested something else and noticed by accident. So new/ poor players beware.

I had a bug in which my insured ship didn't actually insure meaning that I lost the entire loadout. So there's a chance that if you upgrade your ship with looted and crafted components that they'll disappear. I don't know if this has happened to anyone else.

It's a bit of a high risk system tbh, there's so much riding on this not being bugged/ messing up because randomly exploding is one thing but randomly exploding and finding out that the system was bugged and you've lost all your weapons/ components and pledged paint is another.

If working correctly though it's really not that scary of a change.

Edit: One thing I regrettably didn't test was claiming a ship from one location to another. So if I have an insured ship with a new loadout and a pledged paint sitting at seraphim and I'm in Nyx I don't know if I can get it there without either losing the loadout and paint or having to fly all the way back to sera to get it and fly all the way back to Nyx again. Which would mean the ship I was just in would have to stay in sera or go back to its stock loadout if I claimed it back in Nyx

I introduce to you the ugly stepchild of the Star Citizen verse. I cannot remember the last time I saw a freelancer come up in conversation when recommending starter ships. But, at one point, it was considered an excellent and well rounded option.

It was the cargo ship to the cuttys combat effectiveness. The younger, better looking, more user friendly C1 came along and the freelancer has been borderline obsolete ever since, receiving very little attention from CIG.

I bet there’s still a few around here that remember the first space truck fondly.
