The Best Written Females that I don't hear people talk about!
Okay so I'm like on my thousandth watch of SPN, iv been watching this show religiously every year since I was 14; now 26.
We all know that as fans the writing for certain seasons and even certain characters can be very off kilter and we have an issue with how most of the female characters were either written or fridged.
Now don't get me wrong, there are some well written females in the show in the later seasons. Like Charlie or Rowena and (though I wouldn't like to admit it) even Mary (if we go into her complexity as a women not a mother). Anyways. We also have some very poorly written female characters.
In my opinions those would be:
Lisa, Eileen (I think there was so much unused potential), Jody (I love Jody btw but she just doesn't shine like others), Ellen, Donna, Claire, Ruby 2nd gen, Billie.
Now don't get me wrong you can easily disagree with me and I'm okay with that. But after studying Drama and Directing, these characters just always felt disregarded and once they found a sole purpose for each one, they became just that.
But we also have some few good written female characters, but they either got killed off or forgotten. Joe being one of the biggest example. It was always so glaringly obvious that the show runners just didn't know what to do with her character and that's why they always toed back and fourth with her being a sibling dynamic to the boys or a romantic love interest for Dean. Personally I think she would have been better as a sibling type of relationship but I wouldn't fuss over the latter.
But there is just a handful of female characters that I think were written exceptionally well that are forgotten about, by the show and its fans.
The first being Bela Tolbet. First thing first, an exceptional actress I mean who doesn't bloody love Maggie from TWD. Im currently on season 3 and I can't help but feel this fierceness for her when she pops on screen. The little screen time and story time she had I think she perfectly captured the screen. She was never overbearing over the boy's characters but I think gave a nice challenge with their ruggedness. She was a gentle type of killer which I really admired and the little bits and pieces we see of her past helped us show she wasn't just a thief, she soled her soul to protect her childhood and I wish the boys had known that even though she was really well kept on the outside it was pure compensation for the little scared girl she was on the inside. I would have loved her as a love interest for Dean or even for Sam. Just to have her been brought back so the boys could gain access to a bigger finical world of the supernatural would have been an epic story line. Imagine all the ancient artefacts that could have been brought into the show, or even more story arcs. From the rabbits foot to maybe the actual Pandora's box (Like dean referenced in that episode) would have been so cool. Bela is such an underrated character and is exceptionally written for how small her character was but how big she could have been to the show. I know it wouldn't have been possible because of the actress going onto TWD but they could have made something work.
My next well written female is Cassie from the Ghost truck episode in season 1. Now I know people have a love/hate relationship with this ep. In many ways yes it is campy but I think that's what makes it entertaining alongside the small history lesson is interracial couples and the discrimination from outsiders. Myself being born from an interracial couple, I love this episode purely because it was my first time seeing it on tv. But anyways, I think for one episode we didn't get enough of Cassie. Yes maybe there was a bit of over acting on the actress's part, but other than that, It was clear this character knew who she was inside and out. Her wants, her dreams, her aspirations and the fact there wasn't a man centred around it (but a man could be involved) I really liked. She was an independent women who wasn't over written to rough. (As most FC's are in media/content) She had a type of ease to her character that I think transcribed onto the screen that I think was often misinterpreted. I adored her as a love interest for Dean and as a massive Destiel Shipper, there was only one other person I was for sure I wanted Dean to end up with if not Castiel. And that was Cassie. He states perfectly that she was his first love. Dean only went back to Lisa because of Ben. Dean told Cassie up front when they were dating about his life. I think their dynamic was interesting and would love to have seen them more across seasons. Dean going back to her every once in a while. Or her deciding she wanted to find him would have been a cool story line.
These are only my opinions on two of them. Ruby 1st gen was amazing and wished they had kept her. Both versions of Meg (but Meg 2nd is my favourite). These are the few that I never truly see get recognised, and I have no idea why. Some of their writings was the best out of the females in the show.
There was so much potential in the early season with some of the female characters and every time I rewatch I always get sad at thinking would could have been.
Does anyone else agree with me on the underrated females in the show? Can you name any others? I would love to hear from you.
