I've got a 2017 G37x with about 167K miles on it.
It's been great up until this past December. That's when it went into organ failure.
First, there was a communication issue between the TCM and the ECU. Went into limp mode. That ended up costing over $3K to fix. Also had to pay for a tow because after parking when it went into limo mode it wouldn't start. That's was in December. They had it for almost a month.
Second, it got a misfire. Like right away. I forget which cylinder. I had to park it for a while to recover from what I'd just spent on it. But that repair was about $1K, which I thought was high. But I've been going to my mechanic forever so I just trusted him.
Third, when I picked it up the electrical system was "glitching out'. The LCD on the cockpit was blank and unresponsive. The indicator for the door open light was on. There was another light but I can't remember. I got it to work, parked in the parking deck, and the way it shut off was weird. Wouldn't start up again. Interior lights and everything not working. I couldn't deal with it then so I went to work. After work I went over and the remote unlock worked (I hadn't tried earlier), interior lights working, still no start and still weird dummy lights. Got it towed back to my mechanic. It ended up being a short that involved the Snow button. They disabled it and everything came back on. This didn't cost much, about $120. Now we're up over $4K, including the tows.
I get to drive it for about a week and I get another misfire. And codes for the MAP and MAF sensors. This time I decided to handle it myself. The specific coil that was misfiring, cylinder 3, was pretty easy to get to and all 3 of those sensors are, too. I got the parts, not OEM, for a little over $100. Easy peasy.
We have to do yearly emissions for registration and I'm way overdue but I knew I had to drive cycle it to get the codes to clear. Did a drive cycle. The misfire was gone and cleared. The MAF was, as well. Not the MAP, so I figured it was bad. Ordered another one. I was drive cycling it again when it went into limp mode again. Code reader says P0720 - a problem with the transmission output shaft speed sensor.
This time I was able to drive it to the transmission shop. The tech there said that this sensor is built into the TCM. So you have to replace the whole module. And apparently Infiniti doesn't make them for this model-year anymore and there are no aftermarket. So he's shopping junkyards. So far he's found one, from a car with 90K miles. It's $750 and they don't ship it, so he have to drive one state over to get it. That's probably a little over 3 hours. I asked him if he could keep looking. That didn't even include labor.
At this point, I've essentially bought a 2010 G37 with the money I've spent trying to repair a 2010 G37.
What's the next organ to go into failure? Do I cut bait and sell it as-is? I won't recoup anywhere near what I just spent.
Do I fix it again and try to sell it for a little more?
I'm at my wits end. I'm driving my adult son's 2005 Hyundai Elantra GT. It's a hatchback and a 5-speed. He's got a truck also, a 1990 D21, which is fine for just running around town. But on days he needs his Elantra back I take public transit to work.
After all this, I really can't afford to buy or lease a car right now. I've got to recover for a bit.
I don't know why I'm here. I guess I just needed to publicly journal it?
