Hello I’m a junior and I’ve been applying to a lot of healthcare-related programs, internships, and volunteering opportunities this year (probably 18+ total), and so far I haven’t been accepted into any of them. I’m trying to figure out if it’s my essays, my extracurriculars, or just how competitive everything is.
Here’s a general breakdown:
Rejections / Programs applied to:
HOSA Area Officer
HOSA Public Health (team event)
STAARS program
HSSSL
NYU Biotech program
HPrep
Texas Health Plano volunteer
Methodist Dallas volunteer/internship
Parkland internship + volunteer
Methodist Richardson
UTSW mental health program + volunteer
Welch Summer Scholars
Children’s Health volunteer
UIL Science (didn’t place as expected)
OB/GYN internship (Houston)
Medical City program
(+ a few others I may be forgetting)
Stats / Background:
GPA: 4.0 (top 1% of class)
ACT: 34
Interested in healthcare (possibly pediatrics or dermatology)
Extracurriculars:
Healthcare data analytics externship (worked with datasets, dashboards, etc.)
Infectious disease research project (wrote a paper + presentation)
HOSA (Reporter + competitions)
Volunteering at a rehabilitation/skilled care center
Food pantry volunteer (long-term)
Red Cross, Key Club, NHS, cultural org involvement
Dance (Bharatanatyam, performances)
Interests: healthcare, public health, working with kids
Essay topics I’ve been using:
Empathy and wanting to help others
Interest in science + the human body
Experiences with family members and health conditions
Volunteering and giving back
Wanting to work with children
Cultural background influencing my values
Interest in healthcare environments and learning teamwork
At this point, I’m honestly confused. I feel like I’ve put in a lot of effort (applications, essays, interviews, etc.), but I’m not seeing results.
I’m wondering:
Are my essay topics too generic?
Is it more about how I’m writing them rather than what I’m writing about?
Are there extracurriculars or projects I could start right now that would actually make a difference?
For people who got into programs like these, what made your application stand out?
I feel like I’m missing something, but I don’t know what it is. If anyone has advice or is willing to share examples or feedback, I’d really appreciate it.
