Hey all! I'm looking for a sci fi book or series where I don't know the author nor the title, but the details I know go like this:

• There is an alien race that goes around the universe/galaxy picking specimens from the different species in different planets
• They pick up a few humans who get trapped (?) in these aliens ship.
• Human characters explore the ship and realise they are only in a small compartment of a massive ship that contains thousands of species in many compartments separated from one another
• Humans proceed to kill creatures that look like spiders, because humans are violent

For context, I never read the book, a family member did, and these are all the details she gives me every time we talk about it. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these were not accurate.
Another clue would be that I've been hearing about it for the past 20 years, so it's older than 2000s...
