I have a 2009 Alfa Romeo GT 2009 1.9 JTD with 252,000 km on it. Over the last 8,000 km, it has consumed about 1 liter of engine oil. Its average fuel consumption is around 7.7–8 liters per 100 km in mixed driving.

There are no visible signs of oil leaks on the engine, and the turbo is new, so it’s unlikely that the oil is escaping there.

According to my mechanic, the issue might be related to the throttle valve (swirl flap). He suggested that it could have fallen into a cylinder and caused internal damage. He also mentioned that the engine sound is slightly off, but it still has good power.

There was a fault code related to the valve once, and the check engine light came on, but after clearing it, the issue has not returned.

My questions:

  • Is it possible that the swirl flap actually fell into the engine?
  • If so, what kind of repair costs should I expect?
  • Could there be any other cause for the oil consumption or these symptoms?
