Your Chill Tias Co-Creator Celebrates 20 Years of Bragging Rights: Stickball Stories at Bronx Music Hall

Stickball transformed New York City streets into gathering places where rival neighborhoods competed, connected, and created memories that lasted decades. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Bragging Rights: Stickball Stories revisits that era through stories rooted in one of the city's most recognizable street games.

The documentary from Sonia Gonzalez-Martinez also looks at how stickball helped bring communities together during a deeply divided period in NYC history.

"What I want to bring to people through music is empowerment."
— Elissa Carmona

From the days of The Chantels to the current R&B and soul revival, Morrisania has always been the heartbeat of Bronx music. Before the 70s, Jazz, R&B, and doo-wop once filled its streets, creating a cultural resonance that still echoes through the borough's current music scene.

For the Morrisania Band Project, this legacy is a living history. The collective is set to host a Soul Revival + Jam fundraiser at Bronxlandia on Friday, May 8, to support Sing with SOUL, a program that brings interactive music to local seniors.

Led by Air Force veteran Elissa Carmona, the event supports the Sing with SOUL program, which brings interactive music to local seniors. By blending high-caliber performance with community advocacy, the band reminds us that the Bronx sound belongs to every generation.

Author's Note: While digging into the band's history, I stumbled on a five-year-old YouTube video that had me instantly moving in my seat. It had me moving like Michael when he sprained an ankle and still performed "Remember the Time" while seated in a chair at the Soul Train Music Awards. I couldn't help but hit replay. That spark of energy made me eager to start writing this story. Follow the Morrisania Band Project on YouTube
