A bit stressful due to upcoming moving out process.
My husband (37) and I (33) a couple married for 6 years now. We are from Turkey and we have moved to the UK in late 2024 and live in the same rental property since then. No pets or kids. Now we want to rent a bigger place, 2-bed, in London. So that we have issued a 2-month notice to our landlord.
When we were first renting, we had just arrived in the country, did not have a credit score in the UK, only my husband had his contract for the new job which he was going to start working as a doctor, and I was (still am) working remotely for a law firm in Turkey. We had offered 3-month upfront rent and our offer was accepted. Now seeing how competitive the market is, I am assuming we were just lucky and our landlord was a nice person and maybe was taking a risk from a landlord's perspective by choosing us? However, our relationship has been very nice all the time, and he offered us to provide a reference letter even before I asked him to.
Now I am starting to look for properties, however, the below reasons are stressing me out, making me think that it might not be that easy for us getting our offer(s) accepted. As landlords, I wanted to see your perspective and hear any recommendations.
We are not UK citizens. We are on a Skilled Worker Visa.
My husband still works at the same hospital as a doctor, however, the hospital renews the contract and our visa on an annual basis. So it technically seems like his contract and our visa is due December 2026, eventhough it will be renewed if something major does not happen. His take home is around 85000.
I am working as a lawyer remotely and part-time basis for a law firm located in Turkey. I assume this might be perceived as a con and maybe my income will not be considered.
Last day I checked my credit score and saw it was "fair", I guess it is because of a couple of declined payments which I caused by wrongfully leaving my debit account empty, which I paid immediately after receiving notification on the bank app (yes, I am aware I should not have caused this). I am not sure of my husband's credit score yet, however it must be better than me since rent is being paid from his account. Maybe as a plus, we have some savings in our accounts.
What do you think? Thanks in advance!
