My mom passed on 4/16 after sudden illness that put her in the hospital at the end of March. She received her benefits on a DirectExpress card, and the amount for April is basically untouched since she was incapacitated. I have access to her account but obviously they locked the card (I wouldn't touch it before verifying anyway). She did not have POA in place before her death. What happens to this money? Is there something I would have to do to access it as her daughter or will they take it back? I have gotten so much conflicting information while looking this up! For the record, I just want to use it to pay for cremation expenses, celebration of life, etc. She didn't have life or burial insurance. Any help is appreciated, thanks all!
