So I'm a culinary student who may be transferring Treasure Island for advanced Pastry. I was just wondering how center life is and how people feel about it?
Hello! Current student here. I am writing this for anyone who wants info or anything on the center to make your choice on if you want to come or not. The students (especially the females) feed off of drama. There are a lot of good staff here, but some of the higher ups pick favorites. We have rec trips every weekend (almost always a trip to the movies on Fridays), we have at least one (maybe two) Six Flags trips a year and the gym is great. We have (as of right now) a basketball and volleyball team that plays against 4 different centers every year (between January through April). The dorm situation is weird though. The guys have a dorm with AC units in each room, a bathroom in each room, a laundry room on both floors (top floor is shut down as of right now), both head of dorm staff have their offices in the boys dorm, there is a SST room (where they can watch TV and play video games), the halls do get a little smelly, and and there's usually 4 guys per room. The girls dorm is part of the historical buildings. We have three dorm buildings with different layouts for each dorm: K1 is a good size building with four rooms (the leader room is shut down), K2 is the smallest building on the inside with 4 rooms and 1 leader room, and K3 is the largest dorm on the inside with 4 rooms and 1 leader room. The girls dorm has communal bathrooms and showers (stalls for both) and the shower area has a curtain. In each dorm for the girls we have an area where we put our TV's and gaming systems (unlike the boys who can keep their TV's in their rooms). We cannot, in either dorm, go into a room that is not ours or else we will get in trouble and possibly written up. Everyone on center has accountability (roll call) at these times: 6:00 am, 4:15 pm, 6:15 pm, 9:00 pm (mon.-thurs.) 12:30 am, 4:30 pm, 8:00 pm, 11:00 pm (Fri. & Sat.) 12:30 am, 4:30 pm, 6:15 pm, 8:00 pm (Sun. for GI dorm inspections) you have to report to accountability at the respected areas for each gender (Common area for guys and dorm staff office for girls). Dinner is at 4:20 every day and Culinary students will usually be serving depending on if you're on shift or not (will be explained in trade). This center is a non smoking center where you will get in a lot of trouble if caught with any sort of vape and get kicked out if you are caught with weed or THC items. That's the most I'll explain!
So I'm a student at LBJ Job Corps that is planning to go to Penobscott for Pastry. I was just wondering how center life, dorm life (female), and staff are here. I ask about dorms because here at LBJ the female dorms are a lot different than the male dorms. We have the older historical dorms, while the males have the newer dorms with personal bathrooms insteaf of stalls for toilets and showers. I was also wondering about staff because I was reading the Google reviews and saw a lot of horrid things, but it seems different than the stuff said on Reddit. I was also wondering how people like the instructor/the class for the advanced training class and if they enjoy it.
