Hi everyone, I’m in Alberta and was recently terminated “with cause” by my employer.
The reason given was multiple “improper time punches” (clocking in/out from outside my scheduled worksite). The letter states there were 31 occurrences since early March 2026. I was terminated immediately without notice or severance, but will receive final wages and vacation pay. My Record of Employment has been submitted.
I have a few questions:
How strong does an employer’s case need to be for “just cause” in Alberta, especially for timekeeping issues?
Do repeated clock-in location issues usually qualify as cause, or could this be considered excessive?
If I wasn’t clearly warned that this could lead to termination, does that affect the legality of “with cause” dismissal?
Is it worth consulting an employment lawyer or pursuing wrongful dismissal?
Will a “with cause” termination significantly affect future job opportunities?
Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.
