Left is Emacs, right is Micro

I'm not sure how to shrink the kerning. It doesn't seem to respond at all to changing `width` or `spacing`. I want the same width as in other applications (e.g. Micro). How do I do this?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm new to Emacs.
