Main question is in the subject line. Will we be able to/need to backtrack to areas later in the game to use a newly acquired element to collect something?

I just finished the first zone (Rogentia) and there was one mana shard on the overwold map, in the top left corner of the zone, that I just simply could not find a way to reach. I feel like I cleared everything else, which makes me wonder if I missed something somehow and should've been able to get what shard already.
