1st year ape here, to all my fellow apprentices out there, I just wanted to tell you to never give up on yourselves. Don’t let someone discourage you or put you down for taking initiative, for trying to learn more, or for asking good questions.

Don’t let your mental or physical health deteriorate. I understand this is basic but I see some apprentices who don’t take good care of themselves. Pack your lunch, don’t get a cheeseburger with a red bull and call it lunch.

Remember to stay hydrated, and try to get good sleep. I know sleep is a bit of a commodity as an apprentice, especially with a lot of OT, but it has to be said. Being safe and aware on the job is not as easy when you didn’t get enough sleep the night before.

On the job, don’t be embarrassed to ask questions about what’s going on. This is especially important for new apprentices. The quicker you learn, the more useful you’ll be down the road.

Don’t constantly compare yourself to other apprentices. Just because another apprentice got put on something more important, doesn’t mean you’re worse than they are.

There’s also some real apprentice haters out there. Some foremen and journeymen just don’t like you, but don’t take it to heart. At the same time though, listen to their criticism. Get you’re damn head in the game, and prove them wrong.
