I just got hired to work at an Asian Coffee House and the owner does not understand English very well. I am a High School student in school soccer season with finals and prom next week. When I went in for an interview, I explained that I can’t work until the end of May, when I get out of school, but when I was asked if I could work weekends before then, I said maybe some. I got emailed if I could work on Monday and the weekend, and I said yes to Monday, but no to the weekend because that was the week that I preformed for 4 nights in the school play. I explained that I couldn’t work that weekend. Then the week after (this week), I the get scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and asked if I can cover on Saturday and Sunday. I tell her that I can’t work on Monday or Wednesday. She tells me that my application said I could work any day. This is true for the summer, as I explained in the interview, but I can’t work any days other than maybe the weekend until the end of May, which I communicated over text again. I get out of school in 4 weeks and then I can work any days. She says that I said I couldn’t work weekends and asks if that has changed. I say that I can work some weekends, but last weekend was an exception because it was my school play. I also told her I could only cover on Sunday, because Saturday is prom. She retaliates, confused, thinking I can’t work any Saturdays. I explain that prom is 1 day of the year. She asks if she can put me at a constant schedule of Saturdays and Sundays past this week. I say yes because my weekends are free from then on (I would prefer to use the time to study for finals tho, because I was hired with them knowing I couldn’t really work until summer). Later today, I get an email that I have soccer tryouts for club soccer on the day that I said I could cover, Sunday, at the same time as my shift. Would it be offensive to send a message about Sunday in English, and the translate it to Korean and send both? We use the #1 Korean texting app to communicate at this job. Aside from that, does anyone have any advice for how I should manage this situation? I have only worked two shifts and was hired only a week ago. I have been very simple in my texting language, and then when she is confused, I explain with a bit more description.
