Do you paint with default brushes or get others?

I'm still learning Procreate, and am still not used to the default brushes yet, but it seems like many artists don't use the default ones. Is this true?

What are your favorite brushes in ProCreate?

So far, I have been using the soft airbrush as it seems most forgiving, as well as gaussian blur and clipping mask for highlights and shading. While the results are not necessarily bad, but I'm not happy with it.

With other brushes, I tend to have a hard time with consistency, either pressing to hard or to soft. I know I need to practice more with this, so I can get the effects I want. In the meantime what are your favorite brushes and why?

If possible I would like my digital art to look a bit like mixed media

Having Trouble Deviating from references when doing digital painting

I am learning digital painting in procreate, and while I enjoy how it can make some things so much easier, I'm noticing that I am struggling to deviate from references when doing digital painting. I would like to do something more stylized than hyper-realistic, and to use my references as a guide rather than a blueprint.

I'm wondering if I just need more practice in digital, or if I need to work on elements and fundamentals again to start feeling comfortable not depending on the reference so much? Or perhaps there is some other trick to this?
