Solo Travel in Mongolia: Need help

Hello I need advice/help for remote mountain travel.

I’m M26 and I’ve solo traveled around Southeast Asia quite a bit. My favorite part of traveling is being out in nature and experiencing remote places rather than cities.

My travel style is pretty spontaneous. I usually don’t plan heavily, and in the past I’ve slept in mosques, under bridges, or wherever I could safely rest if I couldn’t find accommodation. I normally travel light, only bringing just clothes, some food, my phone, power bank, and a sleeping bag.

I’m now thinking about a trip to Mongolia, mainly for the mountains and rural landscapes. I’m also considering Afghanistan but that’s another story.

What I need help for now:

  1. Budget: Flexible, but ideally backpacker-level and inexpensive. Other than flights, I pretty much have 0 ideas.

  2. Interest: Mountains, hiking, remote villages, open landscapes, meeting locals, and traveling independently and Nature.

  3. Rough itinerary: Not fixed yet, but 2 weeks, mostly outside major cities. Do tell me if this is enough.

  4. What I know so far: I’ve read that rural areas in Mongolia can be very isolated, weather can change fast, and distances between settlements can be very huge.

  5. My main question is: For people who have traveled in rural Mongolia, how realistic is it to travel the way I normally do? Without a strict itinerary, carrying a sleeping bag, and figuring things out along the way spontanously?

Would you recommend arranging transport, guides, or accommodation ahead of time?
Also, are there any things that first-time visitors to remote Mongolia often underestimate? Any advices or help would be appreciated.
