I’ve read of passengers disembarking from boats on the upstream side, clambering up and over the bridge and down again to board another boat because of the rapids between the starlings. Yet I’ve also read of monarchs “progressing” up and down the river (which admittedly may only have happened upstream of the bridge) and of traveling to Greenwich and other locations downstream. I’m sure the state of the tide was a factor, but it seems difficult to reconcile such a passage with other descriptions of the danger.
