hi all! sorry if some of my questions are a bit silly, i'm struggling to find information specific to my situation, i've come across varying info and just want to be sure. pointers to accurate resources for my case would be extremely helpful as well
i am a US citizen and my boyfriend is a portuguese citizen, i live in the US and he lives in portugal. we are both sure about this decision, we're just looking for the best way to go about it. i will be seeing him in portugal (lisbon specifically) this summer and staying there with him for about 60 days, it's mainly for us to spend time together but we also want to go ahead and start the process however we can. i'm aware of the different visas, but i've heard that it's quicker and/or better to do it through marriage (given our relationship), which is where information starts to be hard to research
my first question is: would it be possible for us to legally marry within that 60 day time frame? neither of us care for anything fancy, literally just the certification. we both have "meh" views on marriage as a concept but we don't mind it in a legal sense. what all would we need?
my second question: if we can legally marry in that time frame, and i apply for residency in that frame, am i legally allowed to stay there while it's pending approval? i see a lot of conflicting information when i research this and can't find a reliable source for the legality of this. i see some info that says i'm permitted to stay for as long as the residency is pending (even if it goes beyond the 90 day limit) but i want to make sure if this is actually true, because if so, i would preferably be traveling to portugal and just skipping the flight home. (and i know this sounds... abrupt? but honestly i'm in a position where this would be ideal, the sooner the better, really, i'm not leaving anything important behind)
all in all, just looking for clarification and pointers in the right direction. if anyone has actually gone through a similar process, personal experiences would also be fantastic. thanks in advance!
