My grandma has had the tortoise since long before I was alive, he’s always just put himself to bed at the start of winter in her garden where he lives, digging down into the soil.

This spring, about a week after he’d woken up we noticed this pretty gnarly injury. Not sure if it happened mid hibernation or since he resurfaced. He seems to be walking around quite happily despite how bad it looks, but I suppose he doesn’t have much choice.

The local vet to where my grandma lives says they won’t look at tortoises so I figured I’d ask here before taking him further afield. Any idea why could’ve caused it?
