For those who might not know, prior to the California Gold Rush there was the Georgia Gold Rush of 1829! The massive amount of gold that was mined resulted in Congress authorizing a branch mint in Dahlonega, about 60 miles North of Atlanta. Dahlonega only minted gold $1, $2.50, $3, and $5 coins from 1838 until 1861. The original “D” mint mark pre-dates Denver coins by nearly half a century!
