Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Most people don’t actually care about “horology.”
They care about feeling something.
Status. Nostalgia. Taste. Belonging. Hype. Identity.
That’s why a plastic watch collaboration caused more discussion online than half the industry’s “serious” releases combined.
And honestly? That’s not a bad thing.
Because for every hardcore collector calling it “cheap,” there’s someone else wearing their AP x Swatch every single day because it made watches feel exciting for the first time.
No pressure.
No waitlists.
No pretending to understand movement finishing under a loupe.
Just pure “that looks sick, I want one.”
And if we’re being brutally honest…
A collab getting people genuinely passionate about watches is healthier for the hobby than another untouchable safe queen sitting in a vault.
So I’m curious:
Did the AP x Swatch make you more interested in watches or did it make you feel the industry is becoming too hype driven?
And before the purists arrive
Yes, we know it’s not a “real AP.”
It's funny how much hatred this Swatch x AP collab is getting. First, it was all the AP fan boys ranting about how it dilutes and devalues the brand. Now, all the guys who were originally praising the collab. and were chomping at the bits to get their very own bio ceramic Royal Oak, are now bashing it too after seeing the product release photos. So many people are asking, 'Why, just why?' are Swatch and AP doing this??
How and why this collab came to be was simply because Swatch Group wanted to take advantage of the largest growing demographic in watch sales, which just so happens to be the ladies of Gen Z. However, the fastest and largest segment of that growth also happens to be luxury watches, and unfortunately for Swatch, none of their brands, even Omega, resonated enough with that demographic. To be a big success, they needed a name with higher brand recognition & desire amomg Gen Z ladies (e.g. Rolex, Cartier., Chanel, AP). And hence this strategic partnership was formed.
But how does this benefit AP and why did they say yes to teaming up? Well, above and beyond the invaluable hype and free marketing by the social media stir around this collab, they're effectively priming Gen Alpha girls on the AP name and brand, and growing their future customer base. And of course, the colossal success of the MoonSwatch definitely played a big part in their decision.
Knowint what demographic this collab is mainky for also explains the design of the final product (to be clipped to bags/purses and interchangeable to match outfits) and its bright colorways. So, sorry for all the fellas complaining but this release wasn't really for you. This one's mainly for the ladies.
Will this release be anywhere near as successful as the MoomSwatch? Definitely not,. But I do commend Swatch on this well thought out strategy, and very curious to see how well this one sells.
Do you all think this collab will be successful??
Would this influence your decision to eventually get one ?
There are 2 variants
“Lepine” With Hour and Minutes Hands $400
“Savonnette” With the same and Small Seconds $420
Just saw this post from Delugs on Instagram that they will be designing a special strap that Will house the royal pop. There were clearly a lot of demand so I’m not surprised that they jumped on this opportunity. Interested to see how this turns out any thoughts?
Hey guys I’ve noticed that on the swatch website we can see the wear it your way text and it says “wear them around your neck, on your wrist“ on wrist???
People complain collaborations “dilute” luxury brands, but collaborations like this bring younger people into watches who later learn about:
• mechanical movements
• finishing
• case design
• horological history
Most collectors didn’t start with a perpetual calendar.
Curious where everyone here stands on this.
Ignoring hype and resale for a second — which model do you genuinely think collectors will still chase years from now?
My picks:
• Black for versatility
• Blue for everyday wear
• White because it feels the most “summer watch”
Interested to hear everyone’s reasoning, not just rankings.
