While I can see the benefit in the overall concept of variable yields, I don't get why you would ever want to deploy a nuclear weapon with, say, the 0.3kt minimum yield on the B61, when (to my understanding) it wouldn't be capable of destroying most targets that are specifically hardened against nuclear strikes and its effects could feasibly be replicated using conventional weapons, but you would still have to deal with the political repercussions of firing a nuclear weapon in anger. Does anyone know what the rationale behind including building such low yields into these weapons is?
