Why don't the Liberals take more moderate city positions and let the Nationals fight One Nation?

Why can't they pick their fights? The Libs should publicly disagree with One Nation, let the Nats handle that battleground, and then, if they win enough seats, figure out a Coalition agreement to keep Labor out of the executive. Is there a reason this wouldn't work?

I'm not a Liberal voter, but I almost joined the party when Sussan Ley was leader because I thought her moderate direction was good for both the party and the country. Now, Trump-style politics is hijacking their entire platform and they won't be able to out-populist One Nation or the Nationals.
