TOO. MUCH. PURPLE AND PASTELS.
It used to feel special to see Kuromi wearing anything outside of black and pink— the classic colors she was first introduced in and most well-known for— but nowadays you’re totally screwed if you want a piece of merch with Kuromi and her classic colors without paying an extortionate price. Purple and pastel colors are almost ALL you ever see now and I’m sick of it. ESPECIALLY for a character whose aesthetics originally derived from punk, goth and emo culture in the 2000s and was made to be My Melody’s polar opposite.
Nowadays, she feels declawed. She’s not a spunky, wild emo kid anymore, she’s a “pastel goth” (BARELY even “goth” if any one aesthetic at all, actually) posing as a spunky emo. She feels just like My Melody— the Mario to her Wario— only slightly moodier.
I really hate to be yet another nostalgia-blind “new thing bad, old thing good” folk and that’s not at all what I intend to be, but personally, this is one of those instances where I feel like it GENUINELY applies. Her modern portrayal is just so boring and lame compared to what she used to be through the 2000s-mid 2010s, especially when MOST OTHER Sanrio characters are already constantly seen and marketed in pastels.
