On August 13, 2024, four-day-old Palestinian twins, a boy named Asser and a girl named Ayssel, alongside their mother, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza.

The father, Mohammed Abu al-Qumsan, had left their home to go to a local government office to register the births of his children, who were born via caesarean section four days prior.

While he was away, an Israeli airstrike hit the apartment where the family was sheltering, killing the twins, their mother; Joumana Arafa, and their grandmother.

The family had previously evacuated from Gaza City in the early weeks of the war, following Israeli military instructions to seek shelter in the central part of the Gaza Strip.

Images of Abu al-Qumsan holding the freshly minted birth certificates, alongside video of him grieving at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, were widely circulated, drawing international attention to the incident.

The Israeli military stated that the details of the incident were "not known" to them immediately following the report, but affirmed that they target Hamas, not civilians.

This incident brought the number of newborns killed during the Palestine-Israel war to over 115, according to the Gaza health ministry.

Hind Rajab (May, 3, 2018 – January, 29, 2024) was a five-year-old Palestinian girl whose death during the Gaza war became a global symbol of civilian suffering. She was killed by Israeli tank fire while fleeing Gaza City with her family.

On January 29, 2024, Hind was fleeing Gaza City in a car with six family members when they came under fire from an Israeli tank in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood.

Hind was the sole initial survivor in the vehicle. She remained on the phone with Palestine Red Crescent Society dispatchers for over three hours, pleading for rescue while surrounded by the bodies of her relatives.

Two paramedics, Yousef Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, were dispatched in an ambulance after reportedly receiving safe passage coordination. However, they were killed when their ambulance was struck by tank fire just meters from Hind's car.

Hind’s body was found 12 days later, on February 10, 2024, after Israeli forces withdrew from the area. Investigations by Forensic Architecture found 335 bullet holes in the vehicle, indicating it had been targeted by heavy machine-gun fire.
