Every time I have a rough student/class, I find myself resorting to being very stern with them. I always feel awful afterwards because it’s not really a natural trait for me, but I notice that students do respond. It’s never anything mean, harmful, etc. but it’s always me being very direct (Going down to a student at eye level, and speaking with a little force and directness and usually discussing a consequence). I just feel that it ultimately leaves the student with a negative experience, regardless of their own behavior which is a lot of times just letting themselves get out of control because there is a substitute so they decide it’s not a “serious school day”. Any thoughts?
