Hi everyone, I’m hoping for help identifying the parents of my ancestor James Carroll, born August 11, 1820 in Kentucky (consistent across multiple records). He died August 13, 1881 in Leeslick, Harrison County, Kentucky, and is buried in Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana.
He married Jane Ervin Hamilton in Fayette County, Kentucky (1842). The marriage bondsman was Andrew Carroll, whom I strongly suspect was a brother or close relative.
What I know about James:
- Lived in Fayette County, later moved to Harrison County (District 2 / Leesburg area)
- Also held land interests in Scott County, Kentucky
- Occupation: farmer, stock trader
- Substantial landowner before the Civil War
- Served as Captain, Co. F, 12th Kentucky Cavalry (Confederate)
- Jane Hamilton’s father was Thomas J. Hamilton (who lived in the "Eastern division of Fayette County" at the time of James and Janes marriage)
Key clues to parentage:
The 1880 census lists his father born in Virginia and mother born in Missouri (possibly Maryland depending on handwriting interpretation).

In the 1860 Harrison County census, an 85-year-old Dorathy Carroll (born Maryland) appears in his household. I suspect she may be his mother or a very close elder relative. (Thomas Hamilton also appears in the household).

A William Carroll appears in earlier Scott County records and may be connected, but I have not confirmed the relationship.
Secondary/family research suggests possible parents as William Charles Carroll and Dorothy (Dolly) Emery, but I have not found primary documentation to confirm this.
Marriage record:
James Carroll & Jane Ervin Hamilton
Fayette County, Kentucky (1842)
Bondsman: Andrew Carroll

My main questions:
- Who were the parents of James Carroll (1820–1881)?
- Is Dorathy Carroll in the 1860 household likely his mother, or a different relative?
- Are there Scott County probate, land, or court records that might name James Carroll as an heir or son?
- Does Andrew Carroll appear in any documented Carroll family group tied to James?
⸻
I suspect the key may be in Scott County records (roughly 1820–1855), but I’d really appreciate fresh eyes or anyone familiar with Carroll families in this region of Kentucky.
Thank you for any help or direction.
Edit to add: many trees online attributed a Dempsy Carroll to be James father. I find this a lower possibility and just a a copy and paste repeating instead of something backed by records.
