Those of us who are on here already know how every other day the same question pops up of some white collar guy in his early 30s who wants to quit his stable office job and become an apprentice. I get that its important to be welcoming of people who are interested in the trade and a lot of great electricians started off in white collar before switching, but with how often we see the same post I feel like a lot of these guys are just delusional because of the so called hiring boom that they see people talking about on social media and the 280k/yr number that Fox news claims. So I wanted to try to put some of the rumors to rest with real data. As you can see by the most recent jobs report, there is no increase of jobs in this industry, so no it's not an easy time to just quit your job and become an apprentice.
Forgive me for ranting but I think a good chunk of these guys like I said are either delusional and think that they can become an apprentice effortlessly and make a shit ton of money fast when we all know that the only guys making that are journeyman putting in 70-80 hours a week making above scale in Utah. If you are one of those guys I don't know what's best for you but don't quit your job just because you're having a mid life crisis.
I wanted to add an edit: another common concern I've seen raised a lot on this sub is that blackrock and other private equity places are trying to flood the market with unskilled electricians and drive our wages down. Hopefully this should give you some peace of mind thats not happening, as much as the elites would love to do that to us.
