StarCraft Cosmology!
This thread is to talk about what I believe is a detailed description of the cosmology of the StarCraft universe.
Main Universe
Universe
This is the main setting for the StarCraft story, it is much like that of the real universe, with planet Earth being home to humanity, they even have songs from real humanity ("Sweet Home Alabama").
The main setting is in the Koprulu Sector, a large section of space located on the fringe of the Milky Way Galaxy, approximately 60,000 lightyears from Earth^([1]).
There are all but common source of energy and resources in this universe however are Minerals and Vespene Gas.
- Vespene Gas is a hypercarbon compound that is the most high-performance fuel in the galaxy^([1]). It is usually found below a planet's crust and can be extracted from geysers^([2]). It can come in liquid form too^([3]). Other races have used it such as Zerg for nourishment and enhancing their evolution while Protoss uses it to catalyze their psionic powered machines^([1]). the geysers are considered all but unlimited, but harvesting to a point will cause them to collapse on themselves^([1]). Vespene comes in different colors with their different values^([4]).
- Minerals are crystal-like ore, usually found in mountains or asteroids^([6]), found in the material universe and even outside it too. Significant clusters can disrupt satellite imaging and radar device functions. Various species have utilized them for physical manufacturing such as starship armor for Terrans and Protoss or hardened carapaces or teeth for Zerg^([1]). Minerals grow over time and are strong on their own, requiring specialized tools or anatomy to harvest them^([1]). There are other types of Minerals which are "enriched", glowing and possessing greater quantities.
The universe possesses a third substance that is more rare than not in certain areas or uses by it's species, Terrazine Gas. Described as being related to Vespene Gas but has exotic properties to it. One such as organics to affect brain chemistry and acts like a drug, used by Terrans to enhance psionic potential humans. for Protoss sub-groups, it is believed to be able to communicate to the Xel'Naga^([7]), and in great quantities can open rifts to the Void and manifest beings there, it is considered foreign to the universe though as it is likely originated in the Void.
Dimensions/Realms/Planes
Warp Space
It is an alternate dimension that can be utilized by races to travel faster than light. For individual entities, first time warp travel maybe unsetting for them. some rifts would form linking between warp space and material universe. It is not a simple matter as those who travel through Warp Space for if they put in the wrong coordinates could end up killing them or sending them too far from any location they can't get back^([8]) or collide with large objects^([9]).
Some species have their own way of utilizing warp travel, with Terrans, their warp engines to travel short manageable distances or avoid obstacles. Zerg with their own evolutionary biology to withstand the riggers of warp travel with large gateways. Protoss having studied space and time for millennia, They can utilize it more than just travel between planets but to transport units or summon buildings with Warp Rifts.
Void
This dimension is the cold, empty reflection of the material universe, it is the home where the god-like Xel'Naga reside and move between universes. It has it's own land formations and is breathablefor other creatures from the material universe, however areas can kill beings by drain their life force. It can be accessible as currents in the material universe which is affected by gravity or solar winds^([6]).
Through focal points like the Keystone, when matter, information, essence and consciousness entering the Void as energy, it can convert energies from one universe to another.
It's energies are volatile and in large quantities is dangerous to beings such as Zerg and Protoss. It is capable of distorting the physical substances such as spaceships such as forming crystals on the hall. The Void can bend the universe and warp the fabric of spacetime.
Beings who can harness the void can overcome certain drawbacks such as Protoss who are disconnected from their Khala but resting it's power through discipline and will. and can use it's currents for FTL travel^([6]), enhance their psionic powers or used as weapons. for the Dark Templar it is treated as a type of afterlife for them. for the Xel'Naga, if they die in the material universe, they can return to the void as just their mental states and can be reformed physically overtime.
Other Realities/Timelines/Multiverses
Although there are no knowledgeable characters to legit state there are real alternate timelines, Jim Raynor has said that the vision Zeratul sent him that he saw was from another timeline.
However it is acknowledges from Xel'Naga lore that these beings traveled between each universesto perpetual the infinite cycle to create more Xel'Nagas.
Utter Darkness
This is a timeline in the event where Kerrigan was allowed to die instead of lived which then let Amon and his minions to rise to power, consumed the Terrans, eliminate the last of the Protoss and eventually disposed of the Zerg, leaving only he and his Hybrid to destroys the universe and leaving it in darkness.
Other/Artificial/Pocket Dimensions/Spaces/Realms
Altarian Rift
This is an astral anomaly where it lies between universes and houses Ulnar where the Xel'Naga rest. It is supposedly impossible to enter for spacecraft as they would be shredded down to their base particles. It defies all forms of celestial mechanics and it's presence makes transmissions impossible to be received.
(NOTE: I put in “supposedly” because they said that it would be impossible for ships to enter the Rift yet the Protoss were able to, which makes me believe the stories are are likely propoganda)
