As a brief overview, I am using Anki for Kaishi 1.5k specifically right now. I'm trying to get a foothold in learning Japanese and while I've been using Anki for just under 4 months nearly every day, I'm starting to worry that I'm going to falling into issues. As a note FSRS has been active for 1 month.
Ignore the peak - This is when I enabled FSRS
Right now I am currently sitting and just over 51.67% / 775 Cards as new and the rest being young, mature or suspended. My first worry is "Suspended cards". These currently sit at 99 overall or 6.6% of my overall cards, this number has slowly been going up and its starting to worry me. I fear that if this number starts going towards 150-200, suspending so much of the deck feels almost wrong as if I am not doing the work correctly.
As a first question, is this something I should be worried about. I am trying to learn the suspended cards in my free time outside of Anki, however that is a slower pursuit and will take time.
N.b I am suspending cards when they 8 failures
The Second part, retention. For my FSRS I set my retention to 82%. This I thought might be a fairly modest number, considering how much time I can put in and what to expect. So far, I've stuck really hard in the low 60% brackets with some days going high 50%.
This number has been bugging me a lot. It might be me being harsh but this is how I mark myself
- Do I recognise the Kanji
- Can I pronounce it well that I consider it a pass
- Can I understand what the English translation is.
If I fail probably any of these, then I mark it as a fail until I pass. The second point Im a bit more relaxed on. With all this said, should this be a worry for me? Because this number not increasing does feel worrying to sorts.
