I have a 3 year old Great Pyrenees who started limping on his front left leg randomly. After the first vet visit, he was prescribed carprofen; he took the recommended dosage for two weeks without any change.
During the follow up appointment, the vet prescribed Gabapentin and Meloxicam. We started him on both medications on Saturday, April 25; after a couple of days he started vomiting, then diarrhea, and on Wednesday evening, he refused to eat.
As soon as we realized that the meloxicam could have those side effects, we threw away the rest of the medication. The last time he took some was on Tuesday evening.
It’s now Thursday and I’m worried sick about him. He’s not acting like himself, meaning he seems extremely lethargic. He also cannot keep any food down that he does manage to eat.
I’ve already called and informed his vet of these symptoms and all they said was they could give him an anti nausea injection, or write a prescription for these tablets that start with a p (I’m sorry I can’t remember the name). The vet tech said these tablets will help his gut and organs.
It feels wrong to fix this issue that was caused my medicine by giving him even more medicine. I could be completely wrong, though. All I know is that I’m scared for his well being, it’s 6am, and I’m too impatient to wait for the vet office to open.
Could someone please let me know whether I need to take him to the emergency vet, or if these side effects will stop soon.
