Oak seedlings?

Oak seedlings?

I think these are oak, but they do look slightly different, so are they different trees?

Also, do seedlings and mature trees have the same leaf shape? I ask because those dry leaves are almost certainly from the neighbor's trees (oak and a ... maple?) that overhang my driveway right next to this flower bed.

Deciding about plants and pots on shaded porch, zone 8a/7b

I'm in southwest TN, with three old concrete planters and a couple of clay pots on a north-facing porch. The front wall with the square planters gets direct and indirect light throughout the day; the side wall with the long planter gets very little or no direct sun.

I'd love to try Christmas fern and Eastern columbine, which are native and hardy here, but am uncertain about growing them in containers. The square pots are about 2.5 gallons, the long planter about 7 gallons, the clay pots under 2 gallons. Will those sizes do?

Also, can ferns and perennials overwinter in pots, especially if they are sitting exposed on a porch wall? I can't move the concrete planters due to their weight. I can move the clay pots to a protected corner outside or to a flower bed, but have no basement or garage.

Thanks for any info or ideas.
