My 5 year old shrimp colony tank collapsed and all my shrimp died
Don’t read this if you’re gonna freak yourself out about your tank dying from an unknown cause. I do think this was preventable. I got sloppy with the monitoring before it was too late bc my tank was so established, I took that for granted, and I’ve been busy lately.
I topped off a little aqua soil and it set off a chain reaction of plant die off causing an ammonia spike that got the shrimp.
I tried to get on top of it but this happened largely over a few days stretch I was out of town. I know what went wrong though and I think in another scenario I could have tried to move the living shrimp to one of my other tanks, but I was nervous about fish eating them and then adjusting to a new environment.
Have been doing water changes and prime and cycling treatment for the last week and a half, but today I woke up to very cloudy water again and the last few shrimp dead on the ground.
I’m gutted. Not sure where to start with the clean out. Just dump it all out and start a fresh scape? I hate this and I feel bad for my little shrimpers.
