Hey everyone

I’ve been a hobbyist photographer for almost 20 years, shooting with a Nikon D7000. Most of my work is outdoors, especially in wooded areas where light can get pretty challenging, deep shade, uneven lighting and generally not a lot of control over conditions.

I’m finally looking to start learning flash photography to improve my results in these situations. I’ve basically been an available light and bounce flash shooter up to this point (using my reflector usually requires me to have an extra person with me), so I’m starting from scratch with flash.

I’m not looking to jump into anything super complex or expensive right away. Ideally I’d like something entry level and forgiving while I learn -either a basic hot shoe speedlight or a simple off camera setup with triggers/batteries. Budget friendly is definitely a priority, but I also don’t want to buy something I’ll outgrow immediately or that makes learning harder than it needs to be.

If anyone has recommendations for solid starter flashes that work well with the D7000, or a simple setup that’s good for learning off camera lighting in natural environments, I’d really appreciate it. Also open to “avoid this and start here instead” type advice from people who’ve been through the learning curve.

Thanks much
