I'm on the hunt for my fourth 958 Cayenne (yes, I have a problem) so I've been using the Porsche Finder a lot. Many Porsche dealers only show inventory on this site, or it shows up earlier than on other websites. I've cast my net nationwide because I'm looking for the "right" car.
I recently walked away from an amazing CPO Porsche Cayenne S at a fairly decent price. I say decent because in my case, the price increased twice before I had signed anything. The reason for the price change was because the car was listed on Porsche's "Finder" site before they had officially evaluated the car. I come to find out this is very common right now. I've inquired about two other Cayennes and the price changes a few days later. Here's my story:
A 2017 Porsche Cayenne S in a very desirable color/interior combo was listed for $22500 on Porsche's finder site. Seemed a little low to me, even though this car had 87k miles per the Porsche's site. I inquired, was immediately contacted and I confirmed the price that was listed with the salesman. The salesman said yep, that's the price AND it's also CPO! He sent me some photos. Well, the odometer photo actually showed a hair over 90k miles, so I'm already annoyed. But at $22,500 and with the miles this car had, that was a steal so I was going to buy that car immediately.
Well, long story short he called me back about 2 hours later saying it hadn't finished going through their shop and there was a chance that it might get about $2,000 more expensive if it needs brakes in order to pass CPO. I was miffed but it was still below market for this car so I said OK whatever, just let me know the final price before I sign anything since that was not a hard number. A week goes by and I've been following up with my salesman daily. The delay was in the shop (long story, but they had a tech that just went MIA on cars he was supposed to work on) and finally I got a sales proposal. The car had gone up $4,000. So at this point, a $22,500 car went to $23,500 then $26,500 in a week. I was still interested but also really pissed.
Another week went by because the car still hadn't been officially certified. 3 weeks from my inquiry date, I finally get a note from the sales manager that they they can actually sell the car because it's ready. I asked for at least a photo of this car since I hadn't even seen it detailed yet. Wheels were curbed. All of them. So again I had to ask the salesman about the damage and if it's being handled by them pre-sale (Porsche CPO is required to have reconditioning done, and these wheels needed it badly).
Anyway, I gave it a night and then I just walked. I just couldn't give these guys my money after a 3 week ordeal of mileage and price shenanigans. During this process I ended up looking at another car that popped up - A Cayenne Turbo - also CPO, also listed for an unbelievable price. I called, they were like yeah that price isn't right. The actual price is $10k more. So this isn't isolated. These were dealers on opposite sides of the country. I'm just really frustrated I wasted 3 weeks getting excited for nothing.
Just a word of caution and also just a bit of venting on my part. I'm still mad I didn't get the '17 Cayenne S. It was frigging gorgeous, but being jerked around with wasn't going to make this purchase a happy one.
