Daughter diagnosed with AGA this week and prescribed 2% minoxidil. We have two cats.
Dermatologist was pretty uncaring overall, didn’t know it was toxic to cats, and said to apply daily each morning.
Having done my own internet research I’m now feeling v nervous about my daughter starting this but don’t think we have other treatment options at this point, given her age, so we’re planning on being meticulous about not exposing the cats to it.
Would love if someone can advise on our plan:
- let cats outside first thing, apply in the bathroom in the morning. Wash hands, surfaces, floors etc. One of the cats often sleeps in the sink, so guessing we need to avoid that.
- The cats usually sleep on the kids’ beds if they’re inside during the day. So we’re planning to put my daughter’s pillow and PJs away in wardrobes/drawers.
- Her over-head headphones can live in their pouch. Wipes on hand to wipe them down after use.
- We’ve got make up brushes / baby toothbrushes to apply the minoxidil and bought a special make up bag to keep them and the minoxidil bottle in. All stored away.
- silk bonnets ordered for if she does need to apply at night
Anything else we could be doing?
Applying in the morning seems to make most sense in terms of avoiding it transferring to other places, especially as term-time she’s at school all day… but what about weekends and school holidays or even just after school?
She’s a teen, she has her moments lounging around so what do we do about the sofas? Or even just on her clothes a bit. Our ours if she wants a cuddle / lays on our laps watching tv etc?
Do we have to be super conscious of wherever she puts her head?? She tends to wash her hair every other day so I’m conscious there’s time for potential residue to get places. Do we need to be super careful to rinse the shower out after she’s washed her hair?
Several of her friends have cats too, can’t begin to think about sleepovers… one step at a time… one step at a time.
I know we’re just at the beginning of the journey but it all feels so overwhelming and such a big burden for my poor girl.
