Our lease is up at the end of May, and I asked for an extension to the end of June. I was told it was fine, the lease would just go month to month after the initial term. However last week the rental company came by and put a lockbox on my door and asked me to put a key in it and tell them when they can show the house.

I told them we only have two keys, one for me and one for my wife, and neither of us can go without a key. We also have until the end of June to get packed up to go and since we’ve been here two years there’s obvious wear and tear that I need to address when I have time. But apparently the owner wants it back on the market asap so I guess I can look forward to people parading through for the next two months.

The rental company then said that since they need to start showing it they really need a key in the lockbox and asked me to go make a copy of my key. When I asked if I would be compensated for my time and the cost of a copy, they replied that if I keep the receipt they’ll reimburse me for the key but not for my time.

Should I tell them to shove it? I’m not going to go out of my way to pay for an extra key when they should already have their own copy and they just want to run strangers around my home until I leave. Any advice on how to handle this?

Edit 1: idk why some of you seem to think the lease going month to month at end of term means they’re doing me a favor or implying I’ll be staying an extra month for free. I will still be paying rent to stay there in June, this isn’t a charity case.

I also understand that they are allowed to show the property, and technically could have been showing it the entire time I lived there if they really wanted to. That was more of a mini vent because it’s annoying that they’re already trying to start showing it even though I’ve made my intentions of staying longer extremely clear.
