Quickest, most effective way to learn a work?
Hello all,
I grew up playing classical piano, but am coming back to dabble in it after many years of playing guitar by ear. At my peak of playing piano I could do a fairly bad rendition of Liszt's La Campanella.
I wanted to learn to play some pieces fluidly, starting with some Bach inventions, but I am unsure about the best way to proceed. My goal is to acquire pieces quickly and also to be able to sight-read well. I'm not sure if these are competing goals.
What is the best place to start? Should I maybe choose some extremely basic music and sight-read that first, or is it ok to work on Bach inventions directly?
Should I attempt to sight-read the entire piece first? Should I do it with a metronome? Should I instead break off a few measures and master those chunk-by-chunk?
Should I try to follow the fingerings written, or should I ignore those at first?
Thank you for any help and suggestions!
