Just finished my junior year, didn’t get an internship had an interview at FAANG and didn’t get an offer. I’ll be going into my senior year without anything and will obviously have to look for a job without an internship. All I have is an unpaid one I did 2 years ago, and worked in a research lab. Thought of getting involved in open source (found a young but growing project with active users and contributors) and I’m reading that doesn’t even do anything for getting interviews/jobs. I’ve been honestly just sitting here thinking about the rejection email thinking to myself that I probably blew the only real chance that I actually had to get a job after I graduate.

I always hear about software engineering is done and these other fields are going away. Why can it do this but not welding or hvac?

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I feel like the needs of the industry constantly change every year. Here’s my background. I’m a junior in college who is struggling to find internships. I found a small but growing open source project that has actual users (7 figure number) and a lot planned for it. While I don’t necessarily use this project a lot, I use its closed source alternatives/competitors very closely and found those projects interesting. So I was considering getting involved in this project. Will this actually boost my resume a lot if I do meaningful contributions to this project?
