h1b lay off, on B1, how far can you on time to find job w/o having to trigger the $100k. What options do I have except leave/day 1 CPT/another country?

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance on my current visa situation and would really appreciate any insights from people who’ve gone through something similar.

Here’s my timeline:

  • Laid off: Dec 31, 2025
  • 60-day grace period: Jan → Feb 28, 2026
  • Filed B2 change of status (I-539): Feb 25, 2026 (within grace period) (paper filing, still pending, received receipt )
  • Have I-140 approved
  • I also have a valid H1B visa stamp until June 2026

I’m in middle of interviews, My question how long can i keep looking for jobs? Even if I have an offer letter, how soon should it be? Considering can stay longer on B1, how long ? and wouldn't the transfer from b1 to h1 trigger the $100k processing fees?

Hello everyone,

I’m in middle of interviews , and want to know what my options are if i get the job offer

I had a few questions:

  1. Can the employer file an H1B transfer (I-129) with change of status while my B2 is still pending?
  2. Is this considered a “bridge petition,” or is there anything extra that needs to be done?
  3. Should I withdraw my B2 application before the H1B transfer is filed, or keep it pending?
  4. What are the risks of COS getting denied in this situation?

What options people is similar situations are using?

For context, I also have a valid H1B visa stamp until June 2026

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been in a similar situation or has knowledge on this. Trying to understand the safest way to proceed.

Thanks in advance! 🙏
