I got called out to a job last month where the homeowner dumped twenty pounds of rice across their hardwood floor after a dishwasher leak. Said they read online that rice absorbs moisture.
I mean technically yes. Rice absorbs moisture. So does a sponge. Neither one is going to pull water out of your subfloor.
Here's what actually happens. The rice sits on top, absorbs a little surface moisture, and then you've got wet rice stuck to a wet floor. Now you have a water damage problem and a cleanup problem.
If you have standing water on a hard surface floor, get it up with towels or a wet vac first. Then get air moving with fans and a dehumidifier. The dehumidifier is the part that actually matters because fans just push humid air around. If the water sat for more than a couple hours, check underneath. Pull a floor vent or transition strip and look at the subfloor. If it's dark or soft, the surface looking dry means nothing.
Your kitchen floor in a bag of rice is just dinner malpractice.
