I read very little fiction - most of it is either English classics or American authors like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy. My interests lean toward world history, travel writing, and medical narratives. I know nothing about modern literature and this bothers me! I would love recommendations for what folks consider to be the best fiction produced so far this century. I know I could google Top 10 lists but I'd rather know that someone absolutely loved (or loathed) a book. What are the books in the last 25 years that you think have the best blend of strong writing, compelling plot, developed characters, and themes.
