Just a rant
This is humour in the I don't know what else to do about it way, not in the haha that's hilarious way.
There's currently a cold war going on in my house.
Hi. I'm turning 40 in July and 2 months away from giving up entirely on ever finding a job. I sew and crochet for a living, and until last year I also tutored and did assignments. Some months are better others are worse. It's been the worst of months all 2026, but especially since March. As the unemployed adult in a household of five adults and a teenager, the chores fall on me. Because of course.
Things have been tougher this year. Groceries aren't lasting as long as they used to. In the good months I'd heavily audit the list, give the parent adults the big stuff (bulks and meat) while Id take care of the annoying, somehow-will-finish-before-the-month-ends things. I had it down to a science: I'd divide the list so the parent-adults spent a combined R3500, and I'd spend about r1200-1500 depending on what was left over from the pervious month. I handle the cooking so it's easy to control the cupboards. I thought everyone knew this. I thought everyone was fine with this. I apparently thought wrong .
It's been dry for me since March, so I can't list like I used to list. Naturally, the parent adults noticed that their list have grown. As an adult, you would think: things are bad, the economy blah blah, food prices etc etc. Right? Well, wrong. Because last month I happened to overhear a conversation where my "wastefulness" was being discussed rather ... passionately. No one said anything to me, but vibes have clearly stopped vibbing like before.
I made a list like normal, gave to the people.... and nothing. That was last month. This month all we have is rice that was part of the R99 deal I bought last month, salt, cooking oil and sugar. I didn't cook supper because there is literally nothing to cook. I just got yelled at for wasting food and not doing anything but sit and be lazy all day. Did I mention that these are things I bought towards the end of last month? no one bought anything from any list. I literally had to feed 6 people on less that r2000 worth of groceries. Am I supposed to fry the rice and sprinkle the sugar on top?
So there's a cold war at my house. Noone is buying food because I don't do anything.
Just needed to vent because wow.
