Recently, I ordered from a local restaurant through Grab and asked the rider to request a sales invoice from the store. Apparently, the restaurant refused to issue one. I then called the rider so I could speak directly with the store.
During my conversation with the owner, she told me that they no longer issue sales invoices as of 2026 because they are allegedly being charged VAT twice—once by Grab, and again if they issue a sales invoice. I quickly checked online and found that customers are still entitled to request a sales invoice. However, she insisted that this is a new policy, so I eventually decided not to push for it since I also want to support MSMEs.
That said, I’ve been requesting sales invoices for a while now, and this is the first time I’ve encountered this situation, so I was quite puzzled. Is she correct in saying they are being charged VAT twice, or is this possibly an attempt to avoid paying the proper taxes?
