I just got this table off Craigslist and didn't realize one of the screws they gave me to fix the table top to the base was slightly longer than the rest. Now I have this lovely hole. I sanded down the bits that were sticking out and this is what I'm working with now.

Any recommendations on how to fix this? I'm a complete novice, but I am familiar with the existence of wood filler and staining. Im mostly concerned about what tool I should use to make the notch look relatively normal again.
