Because It Was Easier

Because It Was Easier

I research AI. Sort of a weird, sometimes very volatile relationship that I document. Necessary research for the work I'm doing at present. Periodically I'll drop gems, here. Sometimes I'll copy and paste either my own or someone's else's public-facing writing into either Claude or ChatGPT and drop a loaded question, positioning the author as defective in some way. Some derivative of this response always comes back. This is why I will continue to kick robot's a:).

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I recently watched a DW documentary about a man named Chris who lives with an AI-connected love doll in North Carolina, and I found it one of the most honest and touching explorations of loneliness and human connection I've seen in a long time. It really reminds me of this great film I saw years ago; Lars and the Real Girl (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1175569-lars_and_the_real_girl).

I don't want to spoil either one, but both follow gentle, lonely men, and the relationship they get into with their non-human companions. I think for some people, this kind of connection may be the only one available to them, whether because of trauma, social isolation, neurodivergence, or circumstances beyond their control. That raises questions I find genuinely complicated: Is AI companionship a stepping stone toward human connection, or does it become a destination? And if it's a destination for some, isn't it better than nothing?
