Gap Year: Biotech Job?
Hellooo, I wanted to come on here as I had a few questions about my gap year plans. I am currently a graduating senior planning on taking 2 gap years to take the MCAT to get more research/clinical experiences before applying.
I have about 2500 hours in biomaterials research with a few national fellowships/awards, and many poster presentations. Unfortunately, none of the PREP and postbacc programs I applied for worked out. However, I am interested in learning more about biotech companies and how novel therapies can translate from benchtop > clinic > market. I recently accepted an offer to intern as a contract research organization summer sales intern at a big biotech company, as the position will allow me to use my basic science experience to better support the research conducted at CRO's.
The downside is that I planned on transitioning to a basic science research lab to work as a research technician after the internship, as I know that will be most valuable for MD/PhD admissions, the offer that I originally had got rescinded 😞.
I wanted to know if I should try looking for research technician jobs towards the end of my internship (in August) or try extending my internship and transition to an R&D position in the company that I am interning with? As mentioned before, I have a genuine interest in learning about how biotech companies operate, as that is something I would want to get involved with down the line, but I don't want to choose something that would look bad from an admissions POV.
P.S. Sorry if this sounds misguided i've just been discouraged from the whole postbacc admissions process and just need a little bit of guidance rn 🕺
